BREAKING NEWS: CCNY Student Threatens To "Shoot Up" Campus

Words by: Haileny Pereira Carvalho

Harlem, NY

Students at the City College of New York (CCNY) are frightened after a student, Din Bajrektarevic, 21, threatened to “shoot up” the school. Students were alerted after the Executive Director of Public Safety, Pat Morena, sent out an email on Monday, November 28th, informing students, faculty and staff of the threat.

The threat was made last Wednesday, November 23rd via social media messages. “When I shoot up the school know who is to blame,” one of the harrowing messages read, according to an article on the NewYorkPost. Another said, “The city will go to war you dub N***** M*****” referring to the defendant as an animal. “Your brains will be left on the f******* pavement.”

According to officials, Bajrektarevic was arrested after showing up on campus on November 25th, just two days after the warning was made. He was “criminally charged and released, pending his next court date on January, 11th 2023” according to Morena. “Mr.Bajrektarevic is presumed innocent until proven guilty and/or found responsible through a student disciplinary proceeding” he stated in the email.

CCNY Student Affairs has suspended and barred Bajrektarevic from entering campus. CUNY Public Safety has provided extra security on campus in efforts of providing additional safety and putting the CCNY community at ease.

This past week many students refrained from coming to school, worried that their safety is at risk with Bajrektarevic’s temporary release. The Advertising and Public Relations department (AD/PR) made accommodations for students in the major who felt unsafe, making all classes on Wednesday, November 30th online.

No evidence has been proven that Bajrektarevic has been or is in possession of any firearm or weapon. Students, faculty and staff have been advised to stay alert and should anyone see Bajrektarevic on campus grounds, to immediately inform law enforcement.
