Harlem, NY

This past November the City College of New York (CCNY), students and faculty experienced an alarming message when they were notified that a student had threatened to shoot up the school.

Din Bajrektarevic, 21, was arrested on November 25th, 2022. The Manhattan District Attorney's Office charged Bajrektarevic with first-degree harassment, second-degree aggravated harassment as a hate crime and second-degree aggravated harassment.

Bajrektarevic's last court appearance was on January 11th, 2023 according to an email that was sent out by CCNY’s Director of Public Safety, David Morena, back in November 2022. His next court appearance is on March 13th, 2023.

Upon Bajrektarevic’s threat to the college campus, CCNY Student Affairs suspended and barred Bajrektarevic from entering the campus. CCNY’s Public Safety also provided extra security to ensure the school’s safety. This change has remained implemented throughout the spring semester.

On February 7th, 2023, Vice President of Student Affairs and Enrollment Management, Celia P. Lloyd, sent an email to the CCNY community. Stating that the school has taken disciplinary action and expelled Bajrektarevic from the school. He is also prohibited from all CUNY campuses. He is barred from the CCNY campus, indefinitely.

Lloyd emphasized the importance of the campus’s safety and ensured that it will continue to be the school’s top priority.

“Please know that the safety of all in our community is of utmost importance,” Lloyd stated in the email. “We will continue to be vigilant in our efforts to keep our campus a place where we can all study, work, and achieve in peace.”
