Give Love on Mother’s Day
Throughout the year, mothers give love, advice, and encouragement to their children. And on the second Sunday in May, children thank their moms with gifts that show love and thoughtfulness. Here, CCNY mothers, daughters, and sons share advice and ideas for Mother's Day 2011.Neelam Prashad, freshman, psychology and business managementPlans for this Mother's Day"I'm definitely buying her roses."Are expensive gifts better?"I don't believe so. She will love you even if you don't get her a gift, and showing love to your mom doesn't cost anything."Mom says, "Don't buy me a gift!" Should you?"She always says that. That means, 'Give me a gift!' Last year, I didn't give her a gift and felt guilty afterward."Tips for choosing the perfect gift:"I recommend either being straightforward and asking her or asking your dad. Also, she may drop hints. So pay attention to what she mentions during conversations." Jeremy Lyons, junior, musicPlans for this Mother's Day:"I'm giving my mom a card and good behavior." (laughs)Mom says, "Don't buy me a gift!" Should you?No matter what she says, she's going to be disappointed if you don't get her something. The most special gift given:"I got her a pair of earrings that had the birthstones of my brother, my sister, and me."Tips for choosing the perfect gift:"Choose something that is meaningful. Homemade cards are always the best." Martha Guaraca, sophomore, mechanical engineeringPlans for this Mother's Day:"I plan to buy her a bouquet of flowers and a teddy bear."Are expensive gifts better?"I don't think so. I think that as long as you put thought into what you're buying, money doesn't really matter."The most special gift given:"She always says she likes what I give her, so I don't know. And she says that with my love, any gift is special." Barbara Ann Blair - CCNY executive assistant, mother of 2Do you expect a gift on Mother's Day?"Just having my children with me is enough - my children are my gift."Mom says, "Don't buy me a gift!" What does that really mean?"It means don't. Because if you can't think of something yourself and be creative, don't ask, 'Should I,' or 'what would you like?' You should know me by now."The most unique gift received:"Going out of the city with my daughter and my girlfriend and her daughters. Every Mother's Day we plan special trips; we've been to Washington D.C., Charleston, SC, and Charlotte, NC."Gifts to avoid:"Food. Because we eat it and fix it everyday, so how special is candy or anything like that?" Lizette Ayala - CCNY security officer, mother of 3The most special gift received:"Roses from my three kids every year."Do you expect a gift on Mother's Day?"No, I'd rather hear, 'I love you,' and 'Happy Mother's Day.'"Mom says, "Don't buy me a gift!" What does that really mean?"It means, 'It's my day, bring me something nice!'" (laughs)The worst gift received:"A set of cheap-looking hairclips - they were butterfly clips from a dollar store. I just said thank you and wore them anyway."Gifts to avoid:"Cleaning supplies and kitchen appliances." Alison Dean, music professor, mother of 2The most special gift received:"The first thing that comes to mind is my husband taking me to Jamaica - that was pretty memorable."Do you expect a gift on Mother's Day?"I'm not that sentimental about gifts, and I don't want people to spend a lot of money buying me gifts. Personally, doing something nice for me is just like giving me a gift."Gifts to avoid:"When I was about 6 or 7, I bought my mom a pot, which is probably not a terrific gift to give. Again, I think that it's not what you give somebody; it's the feeling behind it that counts. I don't think there's such a thing as a bad gift, as long as it's given with love."
