CCNY students eyewitness the blood bathby Liridona Mehmedovic.Last Tuesday, the subway station at 145 and St. Nicholas went from commuter hub to Valentine's Day massacre. Approximately 17 gun shots were exchange in a bloody shooting, which occurred about 4:30 PM--the start of the evening commute. In the aftermath, a police officer was wounded and a suspect killed.The gun fire left many people scared and stranded. CCNY student Alicia Lyons arrived in the middle of the firestorm. “The moment I hit the top of St. Nicholas Avenue there were two men running saying a man was shot and the train station was closed,” says Lyons, 20. “I couldn’t believe this happened in broad daylight, especially with so many students around.”She describes the scene as chaotic. “There were fire trucks, ambulances, and over 20 to 30 policemen, she says. "I heard many sirens and saw a dark man placed into the ambulance. At that moment I understood how serious this really was.”This incident left students in fear of their safety. "I take the D train to 145th street all the time,” says CCNY engineering major, Tiffany Lugo, 20. “It’s scary. This really opened my eyes and I know I have to be even more careful now.”Other students agree. "So many people and students were around,” says CCNY economics major, Flaka Sejdaj, 21. “Any one of those shots could have injured an innocent child or student. Thank God no one else was hurt.”
