CCNY Celebrates Women of Honor

For Women's History Month, an event focused on several of CCNY's finestby John Little. Photos by Hubert Williams. This year's Women's History Month theme, female education and empowerment, aptly described a recent evening of honor and celebration on campus. On March 9th, the Office of Government and Community Affairs presented the 1st Annual Celebration of Women in Art & Culture, giving awards to seven outstanding members of the CCNY community: (left to right) Angela Harden, Dr. Ramona Hernandez, Dr. Brenda M. Greene, Camille Brown, Pamela Laskin, Lynne Scott Jackson and Janet Steele. (Pictured with Dr. Myrah Brown Green and Karen Witherspoon)Each woman has shown tremendous accomplishment inspiring students and peers alike. All demonstrated poise with gratuitous speeches that offered advice and personal anecdotes. Accepting her award, Scott Jackson noted that her, "circle of support runs deep," and set the theme of "we're all here for the students."Similarly, Dr. Greene reminded us that it takes a village to succeed, while Laskin explained her passion to awaken young writers. Steele mindfully shared wisdom before a Latino dance performance. After the break Dr. Hernandez vowed, "if I die tomorrow, I would do it all again!" The youngest awarded, Brown, indebted her success to her late grandmother who passed in 2006.Harden, who runs WHCR, CCNY's Harlem community radio station, enjoyed the support of a large--and loud--group of fans, shown here.
