The Cops Spied on Muslim Students--WTF?

Most at CCNY learned the shocking news through social mediaby Mai Sabour.Nihal Hashem couldn't believe what she was reading when she opened her Facebook page and learned that the NYPD had spied on Muslim students. Her reactions went from surprised to shocked to betrayed.  “As a Muslim student this is really OFFENSIVE!” says the 23-year-old student.At this point, the news that the NYPD had set up detailed surveillance to spy on Muslim students--including placing an undercover cop on a CCNY whitewater rafting trip of Muslim students in 2008--has been all over the media. But like Hashem, many students first got wind of it via Facebook, Twitter and other social media.USG Treasurer Norhan Mohammed, 20, was informed by both Fox 5 News as well as a blast on CCNY email.  Her impression? “So ridiculous!” she says.Aber Kawas also got the news via through social media. “I felt betrayed and unsafe, like our city and the NYPD had tarnished themselves and spread distrust within the community," says Kawas, 20.Even our administration found out about the spying secondhand--through the media. "The College became aware of the situation pretty much the same as everyone else: through the media," says John Mckee, director of public safety at City College. "We certainly didn't get any complaints through public safety."
