A recent health event highlighted the importance of women's healthby Liliana Campoverde.Did you know that the average teen first has sex at age 17? That was the news shared by Katie Adamek, at a recent women's health event sponsored by the Wellness and Counseling Center. Early sex, explained Adamek, has contributed to the increase of teen pregnancy in the past decade. Among sexually active young adults, 50 percent are diagnosed with a sexually transmitted infection. ”This is quite an alarming statistic and for this reason “sexual health education has become important in schools,” says Adamek, who works at the Center. The women's health event took place March 13 in Hoffman Lounge and reintroduced many students to the pros and cons of sexual activity. Organizers offered student attendees a variety of condoms, colorful lubes, fun facts and of course free pizza--along with facts about the importance of safe sex and being in the know with your body.Adamek also highlighted services that the Wellness and Counseling Center offers, including hepatitis B, HPV and HIV testing. Most recently, the facility gynecological services, contraceptives and pregnancy testing and counseling. “What we’re trying to do is give useful information to help prevent diseases and lower the statistics," says Adamek. "We’re here for the students every step of the way.”Brain Vera, a psychology major who attended the event, said he appreciated what he learned. “It’s good to know about the female body even if you’re a dude," he says. "I want to learn what my lady has going on down there; you never know.”
