The Wellness Center now takes care of more of your preventative health needs—at affordable pricesby Stefany CastrillonWith a new nurse practitioner on campus, CCNY students can now get their medical check-ups between classes. The Student Health Services (better known as the Wellness Center) is now running as a student clinic offering medical and laboratory services like gynecology, pregnancy testing, diabetes screening, urinalysis, cultures and more.Following the Guides of the Department of Health, Student Health Services has expanded their services to fit the needs of college students. "We [want] to run as a clinic, focusing on student related issues, like STDs, stress and healthy eating," said staff nurse Remy Fabal. The center also provides vaccines like HPV (for women), Hepatitis A and B, and Tuberculosis, as well as over-the-counter medication.Services are open to all students. Students without health insurance will only be charged a reduced Medicaid fee for their exams. "Let's say a lab test is $20.00, a student will pay the Medicaid fee, which is like $11.00,” said Fabal.Walk-ins are welcomed, however, it is recommended to schedule an appointment. Students waiting for a lab result will be asked to return within two to three days of their exam. The center practices strict confidentiality and student medical records will only be viewed by the student and the nurse practitioner. No information will be given to any other employee or office within CCNY or CUNY.Student Health Services is known for their active role in promoting student health. "We work with HIV testing, we work with the Peer Health educators, and we have events during club hours," said Fabal. "If students [take care of their health] in college, they will most likely do so after college."The office is located in the Marshak Science Building room J-15, and operates Monday-Friday from 9am-5pm. The Nurse Practitioner is available Monday, Tuesday, and Thursdays from 9am to 5pm.
