Keeping a Level-Head With ‘City Tutors’

By: Curtis AshleyOn the list of resources you should be aware of this school year, local tutoring services should be in your top five. Fortunately for City College students, there’s City Tutors (CT).CT is a home-grown tutoring service that meets the need of the students and the Harlem community. They offer tutoring to the various departments under the Colin Powell School, as well as to groups outside of CCNY.“We provide tutoring to every program in the Colin Powell School as well as organizations off-campus and in STEM programs off-campus. We work with Urban Scholars, Continuing and Professional Studies, things like that,” Jordan Wagner had to say. Wagner is the President of the CCNY chapter of CT, majoring in International Studies and Business Administration. “Basically what we do is provide help to organizations that don’t have it, and we enhance help in the organizations that get it as a walk-in basis.”All the members of CT are volunteers— each of them are trained and have the passion to help their peers and college community. “We take a lot of pride in the tutors we have in our organization...We make sure that they’re equipped to help the students. They work two to three hours a week.” The 30-plus volunteers at CT work closely with not only the students, but professors as well, making sure everyone is getting the best information possible. They goes as far as to embed tutors in the classroom, where they work with professors, making sure lessons are understandable, and even lending hand in regards to teaching the class. “As an embedded tutor, you’re able to give the teacher recommendations and say, ‘A couple of the students are having issues with this. Maybe you should look at this. Maybe you should make the directions more clear,’.”CT is an opportunity for people looking to get the most out of their academic experience, starting from high school and continuing into the later stages of life. After all, the service is about a lot more than just getting good grades. “It’s not just about helping kids on campus. It’s about helping the community, and pulling people forward, education-wise, as a whole.”To find out more information on how to receive tutoring or how to become a tutor, you can check out their website, Facebook page or office on campus.
