The City Never Sleeps...by Ryan WallersonHey man, your car is on fire: Several cars were reported burning on Tuesday morning, and police have been warning people with cars parked on the streets of Harlem since that whomever is responsible is still at large. This morning, the fire setter's second act has driver's in the neighborhood apprehensive to say the least, at the total number of cars that have been damaged during the spree is now at fifteen. Three cars were reported early Tuesday, another five were apparently vandalized during broad daylight yesterday, and another eight were hit last night. If you park your car on the street regularly, check on it often and try to leave it in a populated area. Alleys and dead ends may not be the best ideas at this point. What to do with the free space in Marshak: I'm sure everyone read (deleted) the school wide email sent out by School President Lisa Coico yesterday, but for once, a school wide email actually had something interesting to say. The space was devoted to the failed CCNY Stanford collaboration, and so now has no real designation. President Coico says that we the students will have a hand in deciding what the space is eventually used for. What would you guys like to see? A student lounge, extra study space, an alternate (sanitary) cafeteria? Let us know in the comment thread! You never know who is reading... here is the full letter:September 10, 2012Here is an update on what is currently happening with the Science Library space in the Marshak Science Building. The renovation of the Science Library was started in anticipation of the space being utilized for the planned Stanford-CCNY collaboration on campus. Since that proposal was not realized, we are carefully assessing the best use of the space in light of a variety of needs including those for student activities (namely clubs), study space and other requirements on campus. Among our goals is to restore student activity space and simultaneously meet the academic requirements of various departments and divisions. To ensure we are reaching the best, and most creative, solution for use of the space for all concerned, we will be working with an outside consultant who will advise us on the best path to follow.Over the next months, the consultant will be meeting with students, faculty and administrators to get their input and feedback. Based on all of the information, a plan will be developed with recommendations on the best use of the space. After that review is completed, appropriate renovation will begin. Preliminary efforts have already begun in the effort to find space for some of the voluminous material currently resident in the space. We will keep you informed as this process progresses.
Sincerely, |
Lisa S. Coico |
Health Insurance Tabling: As part of an ongoing effort to educate students about and encourage students sign up for health care, Student Health Services will again have a table on the second floor rotunda of the NAC tomorrow until 2PM. This is not the first time the the table is out, and it will not be the last, but here's to hoping that seeing enough of these notices will convince even one person to go and take a listen. At the end of the day, all we have is our health people; don;t take that for granted. For more information about the event, click here.CCNY Soccer is good this year! Come down and support your team: Last year, the women's soccer team may have been the most entertaining team sport on campus to watch. They have started this season like they ended last season; winning games. Today, out on Randall's island, the men's and women's teams play a double header against NYU in what should be a pair a well played soccer matches. The men have turned it on since last season, playing to a 1-2 record so far, losing both times in tightly contested games. Go out and support your teams! Go Beavers! Tomorrow in the Marshak building, all students are invited to spend some time with all of the student athletes and coaches during a school wide bonanza. Bond with your favorite college teams, or get to know them and their faculty if you don't already. You remember the welcome back ceremony last week, yes? This will essentially be that, but with a decided focus on making you, the student, a fan of your college's sports teams. There will be food, contests, prizes, and an overall good time to be had for anyone who wants to come out. For more information, click here.
