CCNY Welcomes Class of 2016 By Kishan Singh and Angelique WilliamsThe City College of New York officially welcomed the class of 2016, at the annual Freshman Convocation on September 13th.The event was held in the Great Hall, located in Shepard Hall. CCNY president, Dr. Lisa Staino Coico, and vice president of student affairs, Juana Reina addressed the new students.Undergraduate student government executives were sworn in at the ceremony. Afterwards, the Class of 2016 took its pledge and sang the school song, “Lavender, My Lavender.”Following the event, students were treated to a reception located in the North Quadrangle. Many lined up for free cotton candy, popcorn, and smoothies. Numerous clubs and organizations used the opportunity to recruit members and promote upcoming events.Nisha Tabassum, of the office of student life and leadership development said, “The event was a great opportunity for new students to get acquainted with the many clubs we have on campus.”Gamma Nu Delta sorority members aimed to recruit freshmen girls by promoting events such as the diabetes walk. Jevian and Melody, members of the sorority said, “Today at the convocation, we had 50 freshmen girls sign up.”“The convocation showed me that CCNY is a great place to study and interact with others," noted one freshman student. "I look forward to beginning my journey here.”
